Screen size in ubununtu linux?

How do i change the screen size in ubuntu linux to go above 800x600 when it won't let me? I could go up to 1280x1024 in Windows XP. I have a good 19 inch monitor and a nice video card.Screen size in ubununtu linux?
Either Ubuntu doesn't have the right video card settings or the correct monitor.

Your monitor and your video card have names other than ';good'; and ';nice';. Write down the names and go to the internet to search on the VERSION of Ubuntu and the EXACT video card and see what you can find about configuring it. If it is an Nvidia card you may need to go to the nvidia site to download the latest linux drivers AND instructions on how to install and configure.

Once you have read up and configured for the video card, you should be able to use a higher resolution. If not, check what the monitor settings are and adjust accordingly.

YOu can get help at the Ubuntu community sites too - click on help, they should be in the dropdown listing.
